2019 LYRA Race Week

2019 LYRA Race Week is the 134th Annual Regatta sponsored by the Lake Yacht Racing Association, one of the oldest yacht racing regattas in North America. Bronte Harbour Yacht Club, Oakville Club and Oakville Yacht Squadron are delighted to host the event this year.

On Saturday, 5 January 1884, at the annual meeting of the Toronto Yacht Club, the formation of a yacht racing association of clubs around Lake Ontario was discussed. After much correspondence, on Saturday, 29 March 1884, delegates from the Toronto YC, the Royal Canadian YC, the Oswego YC, and the Bay of Quinte YC met at the Queens Hotel in Toronto, voting their clubs to become the charter members of the Lake Yacht Racing Association.

Since 1884 the annual LYRA regatta has brought together yachts from around Lake Ontario and adjacent waters for almost a full week of intensive and exciting racing, including feeder races to the regatta site, the overnight Freeman Races, and three days of around-the-buoys races, with good food and entertainment between. Anyone who has sailed at the LYRA Regatta knows that the events are truly international, giving U. S. and Canadian sailors opportunities to compete and establish strong friendships.

100 Mile Race

The 100 Mile Race is new for 2019 LYRA Race Week and can be used as a counter event for the Overall Regatta Championship (100 Mile Race, Centennial Cup or Founders Cup Race count for 0.5). Awards for IRC and PHRF First Overall and Division Winners. In years past it was not uncommon for LYRA to feature long distance events of almost 300nm, this year we are trying something new to bring our racers from the East end of Lake Ontario to our event in Oakville. Starts Sunday July 28 outside Rochester Harbour, rounds Rochester Weather Buoy, finishes off Toronto Island Pier.

Feeder Races – Founders Cup & Centennial Cup

LYRA features 2 sets of feeder races which serve to gather our fleets from points near and far. This year there are 3 Founders Cup races starting from Whitby, ON, Youngstown, NY and Fifty Point, ON. The Centennial Cup race starts from Gibraltar Point (just off Toronto Island). The feeder races this year are all approximately 50nm in length and start on Tuesday July 30.

Freeman Cup Races

Once racers are in Oakville they can enter one of the Freeman Cup events for a chance to take home one of the most beautiful trophies in Lake Ontario yacht racing, the iconic Freeman Cup. There are two Freeman Cup Races – Long & Short. The long race is approximately 98nm, the short is 47nm. Both are overnight races, starting in the early evening of Wednesday July 31, from outside Oakville Harbour.

Course Racing

2019 LYRA Race Week will feature 2-day and 3-day W/L Course Racing for IRC, PHRF and One Design fleets, from August 2-4, 2019. There will be Flying Sails and Non Flying Sails fleets in PHRF, with fleet splits to suit boats of all ratings and sizes. Non-Flying Sails Course Racing for PHRF boats (PHRF-NFS) is 2 days (Saturday & Sunday). All other boats will have 3 days of Course Racing: Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Olson 30’s must register for 3 days of Course Racing but will race W/L on Friday & Sunday and have their Long Distance race on Saturday. We expect to have as many as 5 circles for Course Racing, and the racing area will be just south of the two Oakville harbours. We have One Design starts for boats with 5 or more boats and in 2019 we expect to have 8mR, Etchells, J/27, J/80, Olson 30, R-Class and Shark 24 fleets.
